The power of testimony

This week I have been thinking a lot about personal testimonies. A friend of mine going through a tough situation told me that she is always so encouraged hearing other peoples testimonies and can’t wait for her story to help someone else. I am so moved and encouraged by her faith and the way she praises God through the hard times. It made me realise that a testimony can be a powerful thing. In Judges 6-8 it tells the story of Gideon.

The Lord said to Gideon, “You have to many men for me to deliver Midian into their hands. In order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength saved her, announce now to the people, ‘anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’ ” So twenty-two thousand men left while ten thousand remained – Judges 7:2-3.

These verse highlight why personal testimonies are so important to share. God intentionally shrank Gideon’s army to a point that everyone who heard about Israel’s victory would know that it was a miracle from God because there was no way an army of 300 men could defeat the Midianites. One of the main purposes of a personal testimony is to share Gods Glory with others. Another example of this is found in Mark 5 where Jesus tells a man that he has healed to go out and share his story.

Mark 5: 18- 20

As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him but said, “Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how he has had mercy on you.” So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

Sharing a testimony of what God has done can be extremely encouraging to others. We are called to encourage one another (1 Thes 5:11 – Therefore encourage one another and build each other up). Sharing testimony of how God has come through in tough times and answered prayers is a great way to encourage someone and build up their faith. I think it’s one of the reasons why it is important to be part of a church community, why you need to planted and serving in the house of the Lord. It’s when you are involved that you can support and encourage people and where you can be supported and encouraged. Watching sermons online or on TV is not a substitute for being part of Gods house.

Don’t ever be ashamed or scared of sharing the work that God has done in your life. You never know how important your story could be to someone else. I hope you enjoyed this post and I would love to know what you think.
